Project Summary

This project was developed for a Foothill Community College Center for Innovation LINC (Learning in New Media Classrooms) customized class for the San Francisco 49ers Academy for the 2001-2002 school year. It has also been developed for the San Jose State University's Instructional Masters Degree Program class (EDIT 226). It is based don the project based learning elements developed by the Challenge 2000 Multimedia Project and the Santa Clara County Office of Education's Internet Institutes (1998-2001).

The model involves teaching teachers to integrate technology into their curriculum by modeling that integration with students. To do this the Foothill College Center for Innovation has contracted with the San Fransciso 49ers Academy to teach a series of six after school computer classes. The San Francisco 40ers Academy is a middle school for "at risk" sixth through eigth graders in the Ravenswood School District in East Palo Alto, CA. The model is also based on the DesignWorlds for Learning's Earth Science Staff Development Program in the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, CA. The final model for this project is the Foothill College Center for Innovation's Earn While You Learn Institute.

Each class is six weeks in length for two hours each Thursday afternoon for a total of 12 hours. The teachers and students taking the classes each receive one unit of academic credit from Foothill College. Each 6 weeks involves a different teacher and group of students. At the end of the six classes all six teachers and most of the students will learn to create multimedia projects and integrate them with the classroom curriculum.
